Busy day. First stop the DeLorme Factory in Yarmouth to see the world's largest globe. Fun to watch it turn just like the earth turns. The detail of the relief is incredible and is over 40 feet across and takes up a 3 story lobby. Then drove through Freeport which is an old town that they essentially converted into an outlet center. For instance, the old city library is Abercombie and Fitch outlet. They built a new McDonalds that looks like an old building that has been there forever. Stopped at WalMart in Brunswick that looks brand new. It is huge. Cannot see from one end to the other and the outside facade looks like a street of little shops.
Main stop was the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath. Used to be a major wood ship building center with 3 companies producing many many ships. The largest wooden ship ever was made here and they are trying to recreate its skeleton with the masts in the space outside of the museum. Only have the bow and stern in place. It will be huge! Depending on donations. Some of the original buidings of one of the shipyards are there. Always fun to see how people worked. Bath is a tiny place. Definitely worth a stop. The paintings of ships throughout are fabulous. Bath now houses an ironworks makin ships for the government. See picture.
On to our camp to discover they fix lobster dinners so we had some. We decided that's our last whole lobsters. Too much work -- and mess. Still chilly and dreary.
