Slow going day. Did make it to the Martin Van Buren Presidential home about ½ way to Albany. Very interesting place and interesting man. Grew up in a tavern on the Albany Post Rd from New York and all of the politicians used to stop in and stay there. Hence his interest in politics from a county official to prez. He was never re-elected and retired to Kinderhook NY and remodeled this house. It was the first day it was opened for the season and our guide was giving his first tour. Didn’t have his uniform yet. History major from Ohio hoping his summer jobs will lead to career in the National Park Service. Jack and I got special treatment and he did a great job. Bad news is that it took a long time. Good news is there are 81 steps in the house and Jack climbed up and down all of them. Seems to be getting stronger. Picture of MVB's bed with cane that Andrew Jackson gave him. Made of hickory of course with silver tips on each branch nub along the stick with letters that spell out Andrew Jackson. Also, what do you think of this - none of Van Buren's sons married and they all lived with him????? His daughters did marry.
Drove onto Troy hoping to visit some other things but too late and the nearest rv park is 20 miles away. So we are in Petersburg NY for the night and not driving back to Troy/Albany. No cell and no broadband so we are incommunicado. Headed to Vermont tomorrow.
