Well, an interesting day doing something different -- shopping!
Continued down Rte 16 in the White Mountains and stopped in North Conway where Jack found a cigar shop. Very nice. Also went into an old 5 and dime store which was just like Findlayson's in Bentleyville where I grew up. All original wooden counters, etc. Brought back memories. Also a great little book store and a hand dipped chocolate shop. Jack dying for a maple walnut cream chocolate but of course they only have truffles. Did have a maple truffle with maple coating. Yummy but not what we had hoped for.
Then on to Lake Winnipesaukee which is huge and gorgeous and seems posh. Kind of reminds me of lakes in Wisconsin. Touristy and many people with seasonal homes, condos and lots of marinas. Seems to be more action than there was around Mt. Washington.
First stop was a fabulous quilting/stichery store in Center Harbor. They have everything and some unusual things but a little pricey. Have to put on gloves to examine the gorgeous completed quilts on display. Bought some new projects of course. Had a great time here.
Jack had been waiting for days to eat at Hart's Turkey Farm Restaurant in Meredith that we have seen advertised since we hit NH. Turkey fan that he is, he has been getting all juiced up and wondering about their secrets for carving, etc, etc. We were just about as disappointed with the turkey as we were thrilled with the German food yesterday. First of all there is no turkey farm. Gave it up years ago. Second, the turkey was a precut serving on a huge pile of dressing. The turkey, dressing, and gravy were all very, very blah. Jack is not the pouting type but he sure came close today. Ma Hart collected turkey platters and dishes which are hung around the restaurant and there is a mounted turkey in the bar. Posed in flight which is OK but not the way I visualize turkeys - none of them on the platters were in flight. They claim to serve a ton of turkey on a busy day with 4000 dinner rolls and 100 pies and 1000 lbs of potatoes so someone must like it.
We just kept on driving and stopped about 3:30 near Dover, NH. We have to see what's here and check it out tomorrow. Having some internet problems so can't attach pictures. Will do tomorrow. By the way I think we are officially out of the mountains because the brake for moose signs have been replaced with deer crossing signs. I for one will be glad to get back to sea level. Enough of two lane mountain roads for now. And guess what? Yet another rv park owner who lives in FL. I swear it seems like every one heads to FL ASAP - mostly people from up here go to the east coast of Florida though - as we know. Midwesterners on the gulf coast.
